Lou showed up at 4:15 AM this morning like he always does, and we headed to a spot where we have been seeing a bird on a regular basis. We hunted that bird last thursday and by 9:00 he hadn't showed so I had to get up and go for a walk because my back was killing me. We were hunting a gas pipeline and I had seen some birds way up it while doing some scouting. I walked about a 1/4 of a mile and could see a strutter way up. I walked through the woods as far as I could so he wouldn't see me and got set up about 150 yards from him. I took out a box call and made a few yelps which he answered. He had a hen with him and she started my way with the Tom in tow. A few minuts later another hen came out behind me walk right past me to the other hen and Tom. Needless to say she led them away and I never seen them again. I ask Lou if he was a betting man because I would put odds on it that the next time I went after that bird I would kill him!! So thats where I headed right after I droped off Lou. It's a walk of about a mile + so by the time I got to where I wanted to be it was light already. The bird was gobbling on the roost further up the pipeline about 150 yards and I thought about trying to get closer but I had a game plan to set up right where I saw him thursdays so I did. I did a fly down cackle and a few yelps and he answered. About 10 min. later he gobbled again but he was closer. I waited another 10 min. and made a few clucks and he hammered back. I put the call down got my gun up and waited. 5 min. later he was standing 18 yards away spitting and druming when I put a load of Federal #7 through hin noggin!!! Bird weigh 16 Lbs. 9 1/5" beard and 7/8" spurrs. I killed him with a call I just finished on friday made some Maple I got out of the wood pile. That call is now for sale if anyone is interested!!
