Title: Record Book Rio
Post by: G8ORB8 on April 08, 2010, 11:27:32 AM
I had the good fortune of having Mike Joyner join me at the ranch for the season opener for Texas. I had patterned some birds just up from camp and set up Mike there. I walked over a couple of pastures to an area I had not hunted in. The babbling creek in the bottom made too much noise for my tastes, so I crossed the creek and made it up the hill through a cedar stand until it was all quiet. I grabbed my #2 semi-long box made for me by good friends Don & Sarah Clark, and sounded off with a couple of soft yelps. The response was immediate and close - maybe 150 to 200 yards. I found a place to set up under one of the cedars with a 30 yard panorama in front. After settling, I again yelped on the mahogany and osage box. He answered in triplicate. I felt like he was on the edge of the creek below me. I decided to make a few excited yelps on a Brazilian rosewood trumpet by Billy Buice. Next sound I heard was wings beats - he had flown over the creek and landed 15 yards from my position, looking for that sultry hen. Another tom had been duped by the craftsmanship of custom call makers. My daughter's little 20 gauge popped out a load of Hevi-13 #6's and flattened the majestic bird where he stood. When compiling the stats back at camp, he weighed 23 1/4 pounds with a 10 1/4" beard and 1 7/16" and 1 3/8" spurs. Using the NWTF calculator he scores 71.875 which is good enough to put him in the Top 100 typical! A fun hunt with an unexpected bonus. This ranch doesn't have as many birds as my old ranch in San Angelo, but this is the third record book specimen, including the 8-bearded tom I took a couple of years ago.
