I had Beagles for many years and I miss not having them anymore.  There's nothing like rabbit hunting with them.  Man I miss the experience.  :(

I do too.  Used to rabbit hunt all the time.  Enjoyed training my beagles and hunting them.  I've always had a kind heart for Beagles!

Brent.

I always a mixed bag.  Some were Bloodline dogs and a couple of Grade dogs. Most were in the 13" range but a couple of the best dogs I had were smaller, one was no more 9" at the shoulder.  We would carry her in our back packs when there was deep snow.  Then we would put her down at the edge of the brushpile and she would go in and do her job.  Killed a lot of rabbits with that particular dog.
If a dog wasn't a good hunter by the age of two I would usually sell it or give it away.  Most of the pups I trained broke before their first birthday, considering I got them real young.  It was aggrevating yet very rewarding when it was all said and done.  I really miss the aggrevation and the fun of it.

Great story, I know what you mean about young dogs ....... They change like the weather. There a lot of fun to fool with. You gotta love those "Pocket Rocket Beagles" little dogs with big hearts. My biggest fear with them is a Big Buck rabbit turning on them  ROTFLMBO ..... There really cool. Have you ever went to a field trial?

I never ran field trials.  I had two possibly three dogs that would have probably faired very well in field trials.  My passion was always more to hunt.  If my dogs were running you can bet that I had a gun in my hands.

I really enjoy Hearing the Run..... I've harvested my fair share of rabbits..... Any more I Just like running them, I'll go hunting with friends and sometime I'll leave the gun in the truck...... let everybody else shoot and clean them. I used field trials to help keep a dog in shape in the off season. Nothing like a pack of hounds "Driving it like they stoled it"  RkLu

I love my beagles. My dad had one that was named "Duke", after John Wayne. That beagle taught my brother how to hunt. He took him out on day and pointed him to some brush. Duke ran up to brush, stopped and pointed. My brother kept trying to tell him to get in there and chase a rabbit out, but ole Duke stood his ground. Finally my brother walked up and tried to push him into the bushes with his boot. About that time, doves took off in every direction. My brother said he looked down at the dog and he was looking back up with a "I told ya" look on his face.  *aah* *aah*

Beagles and Rabbit hunting remain the best of hunting memories. My buddies and I used to carry the hounds up to Maine every year to chase the Hare. Man I miss those days. Some of those hounds I owned really taught me how to rabbit hunt.

Finest Hunting Dog in the world. I don't have one these days but for many years I raised, ran and trained them. My many years of Hare hunting in Maine will always be at the top of my list of fine hunting memories. Back in the day when there were so many good spots to run the hounds it was such good fun to let them go and kick back chew the fat and enjoy the chase. darn I could talk dogs all day long and never get tired of it.
Good Post!!
