Title: Good to be back in the Woods
Post by: Jake St. John on April 01, 2014, 07:17:55 PM
Here is a bird that I worked off the roost in the Mississippi River Bottom the old fashion way.   Lots of gobbling as it appears the birds are making a comback on the river this year.  At least Mr. E is making a comeback.  Was not suppose to lift anything over 10lbs. but could not help but carry this 19 lb bird out of the woods.  He had a 9 1/2 inch beard with 1 1/8 in. spurs.  This bird is notch #36 on my old Stribling box.  Gobbler yelps and cutting turning him back for a close shot.  River in the background.

Congrats John.  Bet it felt great just to get out in the sunshine.  That gobbler made it that much better.

Brent, you should have heard all the birds responding to Davis's Turpin.  The Stribling turned the dominant bird back for a close shot, so I notched it instead of Davis'.

Scott, I was just glad my tongue was not hanging out.   I had the camera on a single stick for a tripod.  I would punch the 10 second timer, run around the end of the long log, and try to smile before the timer ran out.  I did that about 5 times.  I did not even make it back the first 3 times before it went off.  I finally got one where I was set when it went off, so I quit.
