This morn started with snow showers and wind as I sat wandering why I got up for weather like this ---again
The only gobbler I heard was @400yds off---so I drew out a Mineral Poplar/Maple shortbox of mine and began on him. He was hitting it everytime, but he REFDUSED to move any direction. I slow called to him, and he was stubborn to move. After about an hour and a half I began to try a move on him. I was on a finger comming off the mountain and he was on another---there was a 200yd or so bottom bewteen us. I decided to get up and walk to the drop to the bottom and see if I could get him moving. I walked 125yds or so and sat dowm and tried the box call again--he hit it...but was still chained to his spot there. Every 10-15 minutes I checked him and after 4 times I thought he was moving some. I figured I would walk back to my origional place yelping at him and see if that would light a fire in him. As I stood up, I took the Watkins trumpet out of my shirt and tried it---he DOUBLE GOBBLED !!!! I gave it a couple of minutes and checked him., another double gobble and closer yet *bannana*. Tried him one more time and started backing up calling on the trumpet===he really gobbled great and closed to distance fast. Sat down, and it wasnt 5 minutes I saw his white head comming up the hill. He got to my set up,,,came in on the decoys and flopped the strutter 4 times and I sent a swarm of NITRO's his way. Been along time sense I hunted in the snow, cold , and wind and had a hunt this good. He really has a great beard but only 1" spurs.
