My 12-yr old son Drake decided he wanted to try to kill his first gobbler this year. After many unsuccessful trips and close calls, he finally struck on April 14.
I didn't know if we would even be able to make it to the woods, because I had to go plant a plot Saturday morning, and did not return until about 2pm. We loaded up and headed to the woods and set up. I blind-called my way back to our set up and actually spooked some jakes that quickly stepped out to check out the calling. We let it calm down for a half hour or so, before lightly calling some more. This crafty old tom, a gaggle of jakes and a few hens came in and finally offered him a shot after several long, anxious minutes of standing perfectly behind a couple of pine trees, checking for that lost hen. I cautioned him to make sure he picked the one "with the long beard" and his 20 yard shot with his 20 gauge was true.
That prompted much hollerin, hand-slaps and memories! *up*
