The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission voted yesterday to close Fall turkey season in Arkansas. This will be both shotgun and archery season. Our turkey numbers are down as low as I have seen them in 15 years. Not sure what else needs to be done but this is probably a step in the right direction. We continue to have bad hatches and the predators (coyotes, raccoons, and bobcats) are out of control.

While I'm not from your area, I understand the predator issue. We have the same problem in Georgia.I have tried for a long time to the state to start a coyote extermination, without any success. Actually had`coyotes kill a very large dog of mine. Like you said it's probally for the best!

It probly is for the best!!! I'm glad we seem to have had a good hatch this year in my erea of NY i've never seen so many birds!!

Being not too far from hunter22... I'm concerned that the state of MO may have to take a similar approach down the road. Our Spring #'s were way down... whether if it was a weather issue or something else, I believe we were short by about 14k birds this year.
Our hatches have been horrible.
I hope that this helps your Spring harvest and I'll be interested to see what happens. I believe our flock is larger than yours, but we are having the same issues too!!!
It saddens me to see so many states following this trend. I'm making an effort to help control the predator population as much as possible, but I've not been real successful lately :(

Hunter22, I hope things change in the next few years and you can once again chase them in the fall.

I would like to encourage all to study up on predator hunting tactics . If you are already there , well , more power to ya.
I dare say that just about any time you or I go to the field or woods we have an opportunity to eliminate one haired over varmint. It'll just add some more excitement to your regular outings , whether it be deer or turkey hunting .
It seems that the majority of hunting is in the deer hunting realm , though there is a rapid rise in predator hunting .
Those days , and we all experience them now and again , when something goes wrong to mess up our hunt and we just call it quits and head for home , we could just as easy switch from deer or turkey to coyote ,bobcat or 'coon calling.
There is a lot of good books , mags and videos for learning . I highly recommend ''Primos',Mastering the Art of Coyote Calling''. As well as the Randy Anderson hunting videos . If it works for me ,,,and it does ,,,it'll work for you .
My desire is to hunt turkeys , but we can't do it all year long . The closest thing to turkey hunting is Howlin' up a song dog and have it just poke along slowly right up to spittin' distance .Just like successful turkey hunting ,,,having the right set up is crucial.
Good hunting.

drabndouble is right.. we "hunters" can have some control over predator population. I know this year I am going to give more effort to having a successful predator season!!!
If we would all work together, we could start making a difference!

Coyote hunting is a blast. If you've got camo and a turkey gun, than you just need to buy some calls which cheap compared to turkey calls.
-
Getting them with a bow is a blast!!! That is if you use it right. ;D

I have killed every coyote I ever had a clear shot at! Has 5 in my yard the other night and pulled my oxygen line out to the porch, got the 20 ga. and was gonna work on um. But they never gave me a shot not in line with the neighbors house. Called DNR about help. They can't any longer due to cut backs suggested having a community meeting and encouraging hunters to have a couple of weekends of coyote hunting with a Chile lunch of something similar at the community center.
