For what it's worth, I do tune my strikers.  I have a basic design. Once I get close, I start running them on all of my pots and sanding, shortening, thinning it until I get the sound I like. I shoot for a balance among all surfaces, but I have a sound that I am looking for.  Once achieved, I stop and finish the striker.

WA, I do basically the same. I stop when I find two strikers for a particular call. I have a Derby City striker that sounds good on anything. It is a old growth Maple and I use it to check Adam's pots.
