Zach Farmer 3rd Georgia Gobbler
« on: May 13, 2010, 04:47:57 PM »
On the last morning of Zach's visit with us, April 22nd, he and I went back to the area where we had hunted the day before.  He and I both got on gobblers but couldn't get one on the ground.  Finally about 10:15 we decide to call it quits and head back to the house as he and Mrs. Lee needed to head back to South Carolina.  As we pulled up to the gate to leave the property we were hunting on, I saw a gobbler with 2 hens out in a bermudagrass pasture.  Zach was able to slip out of the truck and get his gun and get into the woods bordering the hayfield.  He began to call and the gobbler began answering when for some reason he became suspicious and left the field in a hurry going the other  way.  But, just as he did, another gobbler that we had not even seen began to gobble.  It was amazing to watch Zach work that gobbler with "Little Windy".  It took about 15 minutes but Zach ended up killing this last minute gobbler at around 12 yards.

The gobbler weighed around 17 pounds, had a 10" beard, and 1" spurs.

Over the 3 days that Zach hunted with me he called up 12 different gobblers.  He had a great season this year, with 3 birds in Georgia, 5 in South Carolina, and called up a few more for other people, including my son.

I know one thing, that tree yelping that he does on Little Windy is deadly and it is amazing how far a gobbler can hear it and respond to it.

It is an old Fox double, I believe it was made in the 1920's.  He told me but I don't remember the details.

I talked with Zach today and he told me the gun is a Fox that was manufactured in 1921.  He has hunted with exclusively with it since 1981 or 82.
