going to be needing a new scope, any suggestions?
« on: January 06, 2010, 02:34:15 PM »
i have a pentax 3-9x40 on my 30-06 that i've had for over 20 years, but it has gotten a bit cloudy and i need a new scope.  i'm most likely going to take my nikon monarch off my 308 and then put whatever scope i choose, on the 308.  i'm not looking to break the bank, but would like a solid scope.  i'd like to stay under $300 for the new scope and preferably, closer to $250.  any ideas?

Nikon Pro Staff or Burris would be my two suggestions.  I love my Nikons.  That .460 shoots great with one it on it!

I've been a big fan of Nikon scopes for years.  However, I did buy a Bushnell Elite 3200 with Rainguard for my muzzlelaoder.  For the money the Bushnell is a real good scope.  Think I paid around $200 for it.

I own 2 of the Bushnell Elite scopes and plan on another in the future. I've bought from this seller before without any problems.

Most of you know that I am a turkey call junkie but before that I was a rifle and scope nut. I have Zeiss, Swarovski, Kahles, Leupold, Nikon, and Burris scopes on my rifles. I will say that you get what you pay for in a rifle scope. Do not kid yourself if you think there is no advantage to the higher dollar European scopes. What they buy you is that 10 to 15 minutes of extra shooting light. If you hunt stands where that is critical then they can be the difference between a clean kill and no shot at all. I had a shooting range with a target set up at 100 yards. I would take my rifles with the various scopes and look at the target late in the afternoon until I could not make it out any longer. The European scopes were the best with the Leupold, Nikon, and Burris scopes following. Leupold, Nikon, and Burris are fine scopes, but for not that much more money you can get a Kahles which is what I used to take a nice buck this year with my muzzleloader very late one evening. I bought the Kahles off ebay and it was slightly used when I got it but did not have a mark on it.

i agree with you 100%.  i would love to have a kahles (i have looked at many off of sample list over the years), but seeing how this is going on my backup gun, i don't want to spend that kind of money.  i have a great pair of nikon binoculars and when you look through mine and then look through a pair of swarovski's, it will blow your mind.

do you know how much they go for?  i remember when zeiss came out with their lower teir scopes several years ago, they were very affordable.  i know they have gone up a bit since.
