A trumpet call, may be the hardest for many to get cnfidence in using, but by just being able to yelp and cluck on one.....in my book can be the real deal.
Bill
It is a hard call for some. It also takes a LOT of practice for some people to learn the right air flow ( Sucking too hard ) and focus on the Tip of the mouthpiece where all the sound is produced and amplified through the trumpet. In some respects it's more of an Instrument than other type callers.
What I have found is confidence has to be established "before" you take it to the woods. If you don't believe you are going to kill a turkey with it the day before..... the hunt..... you will not have the "confidence" and "belief" the Day of the hunt. One has to believe the caller is as deadly as any other callers in their vest. Let me say it another way...... you have to believe the "Caller" is deadly.... not you playing it.
Now...... it has happened to all of us. You get dry mouth, or just the pressure ( on the spot) , to make a call to the turkey ends up with no sound. The only cure and best way for that is to call ( practice ) in the woods. Being able to call on demand...... is all about practice and not confidence.
One of the reasons we like a particular caller is because we have killed turkeys with it. So how are you going to gain that confidence if you don't kill turkeys with it? Some people just can't get the hang of it. But MOST give up and or switch to a caller that they "believe" in.
Bill is right. Yelping and clucking is all that is needed. But that applies to every caller
I learned years ago ( and LOTS of callers ) that there is a balance to what I like and the Turkey likes.
There are LOTS of call makers out there that make great callers. ( not like it used to be ). The best one is what YOU play the best. I had a bag full of callers in camp a few years back. I had a friend of mine play all of them. It was without question that one of the callers "fit" him. Meaning he could really yelp on it. We went out that afternoon and he called up his first turkey with a trumpet.
Confidence is both mental and physical. It starts by believing that the Caller is deadly and not as much how well you have mastered it. So Bill, is really saying that you have to let the Turkey be the Judge and not You, to get or gain "confidence". My granddaughter was calling turkeys with a trumpet at 5 years old ( killed her first at 7 ). In fact, I had Ralph Permar make her a 1917 because her arms were so short.
