i guess that makes sense, i guess if you already have all the basic equip, (table saw, drill press..etc.) i didnt think of the routed sides like the big mass produced calls (lynch, primos) and have seen many customs that have the grooved sides. that being said, i have seen really good table tops that you can customize by building your on stand and buying the components at places like Peachtree. i use a moulding cutter on my table saw, but havent made any callers that are grooved, but thinking about it might be a good idea if using some fancy wood that a person wouldnt want to checker...... oh, i use a dado head for grooving the bottom/base for a short box.....
