One for my daughter
« on: April 06, 2011, 06:53:41 AM »
This will be my 13 year old daughter's second year turkey hunting with me. Last year on our way out of the woods I snagged a red oak root ball that was about 12 or so inches in diameter out of an old clear cut. A week or so later I slabbed it up and it was some really cool looking stuff.

This year I figure it is about time she starts carrying a call of her own. Since she was with me when I drug that root ball out I figured I would dig it out and make her a call out of part of it. I think it turned out pretty good. Her favorite color is purple so I need to get a purple heart striker done up for it yet. She actually shed a tear when I gave it to her last night.

Thanks for looking.

Nice call, even better is reading the story of where the wood come from and the fact that your daughter cherishes your love for the turkey woods.  Good luck this season..

Thanks everyone for all the kind words. Mt daughter has not hardly put this call down since I gave it to her. I think she it a natural with a pot call.

Just a word of caution if you have never turned any root type material like this, it eats tools. In the process of turning this pot I had to sharpen my parting tool twice and my 3/8 gouge and 1/2 scraper each once. But, I would do it all over again just to see the look on her face when I handed it to her.

Good luck to all of you this spring.
