question about gobbling

Gobblers Gobble for many reasons, the difference between a Shock Gobble, and any other gobble, is it is Triggered, by what  ever Triggers it, Loud noise, Frequency?, who really knows, but it is Triggered.

Gobblers Gobble on the roost, to let the Turkeys/Hens, flock, know where he is, he gobbles like a Sentinal, to Locate, to Sew His Oat's, to show dominance, Just to Gobble, he is a Turkey, thats what he does.

Quickest explanation to your question would be, One is Triggered, ( Shock Gobbling ) and the Others, are not, they are made for a specific reason, mebe, He is just in a good mood that day.  

I am not, nor do I want to drag this out into a mess anymore than it is, but that is a pretty easy question to answer Shad, the difference between a Shock Gobble, and other Reasons for Gobbling.
I understand the Gobbling in Unison Deal, but 99% of the time, when that is done, it is a Triggered, shock gobble, it is an Instinc that is breed into them.

To even TRY, and Understand, or narrow down to WHAT noises TRIGGER, or Frequency Triggers, and so forth, is and would be never ending.

Just my 2 cents worth, do not want to argue or statrt anything, pretty simple answer though really.

Not to argue but it's not an easy question to answer and can not be simplified or lumped into one catagory. This is evident in the many responses to the original question. Part of the resulting discussion is because there is no clear cut answer and only opinions.

The trigger is a hen yelping which results in a gobble from a tom. That implies that the resulting gobble is a schock gobble by your definition.

My opinion is a gobble in unison after I yelp on a mouth call is not a shock gobble but a breeding response to the hen sound. If I get a gobble in unison from me hooting that is a schock gobble.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here but I see a clear difference in the two situations.

I think the number of views on this topic is indicative of this being a very popular conversation and I just wanted everyone to know that I have thoroughly enjoyed discussing it- not arguing  - just discussing

Let's throw this in the mix......

     A gobble is a gobble.......Pertaining to a given situation, it can be given a name such as shock calling or a mating gobble or a tree gobble or a ground gobble and so forth......Does it really matter, if it has a name.......NO!!

    If your looking for a reason as to why he gobbled...GOOD LUCK figuring out the the answer to that question....In most cases, it's speculation, because we truly don't know EXACTLY why, for sure.....

    Maybe there was a tone/pitch in the way you called that may be very close to a hen in the local flock. Did that gobbler know that voice??

     How much does the local pecking order affect gobbling ?

    Why does he gobble at one seris of calls and not the next ?

    Do the phases of the breeding season affect the gobbling???

   Why do gobblers gobble like idiots one day and next day you can't buy a gobble?

   Why do trumpets calls work great day and the next day, they won't answer anything, you have in your vest....

I like what Zumer said ,,,,''pertaining to a given situation''. We know that there are multitudes of given situations in turkey hunting . What we DO NOT know is exactly how good a turkey can hear . He may start his gobbling at a turkey ,,,hen or tom ,,that we are unable to hear .

I guess the way I understood the question, was from the point that you see gobblers gobbling in unison when crows call, horns blow, lighting crashes, coyotes howl and owls hoot....or another gobbler drums..or just nothing...........at all! Most of this happens during the phase where they are seening who is the boss gobbler.

          Couldn't agree more on your point of establishing the Boss gobbler......

         Here in PA. at least where I'm hunting, you rarely ever see multiple gobblers together, when our season starts......The boss usually has an apprentice jake with him for the first part of the season, but that changes as well about the second week....
