Ramp digging and fishing in WV (pic heavy)
« on: April 15, 2010, 11:40:28 AM »
I was in WV this past weekend at my home away from home. We had a blast ramp digging, fishing, and visiting with friends and family. My land backs up to our hunt club which leases 10,000 acres of land and the best native trout stream in the area is just across the road. We call it "Twin Pines" because of the two pine trees that grow on each side of the driveway.
This is a pic I took last year.

Now, this is ramp digging WV style!!
These are the tools you will need, a ramp hoe and a sack.

Next, find ya some ramps.

Then, start a digging.

Next, talk your dad into cleaning them.

and your mom into cooking them

We had them with eggs, bacon, fish, potatoes and homemade biscuits. What a feast!!

Onto the rest of the weekend!! I wanted to help my son catch a trout out of a river, something he had never done. Yep, I still tie on the hooks for him.

He made me proud when he pulled this fighter in.

Here he is with his proud uncle Tony and dad.

His Uncle Bob and dad.

Now, I know you are wondering, did he eat the ramps and fish, well this is him helping get the fire ready to cook the fish.

And yes, he ate everything that was put in front of him and then some.
Here is some random pics of the weekend.

And no weekend would be complete without gathering a little call making wood. Maple with a little spalting to it.

Thanks for letting me share.
James

Ramps taste like a cross between garlic and onions.  Great with fried potatoes, beans etc.
Taste great,  the smell can stay with you for a few days.  Us hill folk enjoy them each spring.  They grow wild in the hills.

BKA: It is actually Richwood, South Fork of Cherry River.

Thanks guys. We had a blast. This is actually where I grew up. There are at least 11 trout streams within 25 miles of my little camp. The Mononahelia National Forest is just 5 miles away, endless fishing and hunting there. MeadWestvaco has thousands of acres of land and Plum Creek also owns thousands of acres of land in the area. It is an outdoorsmans paradise. Just think, 12 more years and this is where I will be retiring!!
