first chance to scout
« on: February 21, 2010, 10:51:51 AM »
Man , it seems like it's been forever since I have been down to the public land . Bad weather , poor economy , and a blown engine can really put the hurts on a feller.
But after a 54 hour work week , and a long night of restful sleep , I managed to get out . Fine morning too. Calm winds , melting snow , and above normal temps . Couldn't get into the areas I wanted to see the most due to a two-wheel drive truck and still too much snow to risk getting stuck . But I was fortunate enough to see some birds . At least three longbeards feeding in the field near their roosting area on the south side of the area . On the north side , 8 birds in a mixed flock feeding in a small cornfield. Two of the birds were big longbeards too . From the road  ,  the snow cover reveals small ridges that one can't make out otherwise from the same spot .
It was a short trip , but well worth the effort . And I'm anxious to get back out there after more snow is gone and spend at least half the day just pokin' 'round the timber checkin' out the sign.

Mike , my fever grew into an ongoing , year 'round , state of study years ago . That ain't braggin' ,,,,it's just the wat it is . Whatever I'm doing , working , eating, or hunting , everything stops for turkeys . Can't learn too much about them , and life is well past half over . I want all I can get out the sport . The fever only subsides momentarily as I see a gobbler marching or strutting toward my set up . The overwhelming satisfaction of witnessing a gobbler walk into to my set up is far greater than squeezin' the trigger for me . And I ain't all that good at it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but it sure is fun .

I stopped by the camp on the way home from Nashville & did a little prep work for the upcoming season on Sat ...
... came around a turn in one of my paths & ran across just about the same - small flock of 10 or so birds with at least two confirmed longbeards ... ;D

... & had a real nice longbeard in the Camp Field a day or so before I left for home last week - never saw one that close to the camp before ...

Surely will get your blood boilin' ... 8) 8)

If that doesn't get your blood boiling... I'm not sure what will!

Keep us posted and good luck this year.  I'm going to one of my honey holes in the morning too.  I saw a strutter the other day and I'm really getting pumped now!
