Title: Picking one up In Nashville.........
Post by: GR8CALLS on February 04, 2012, 02:53:40 PM
........from Niles Osterle. I'm picking it up, in Nashville!

Hawaiian Toon Wood body, Koa lid, from the late Vic Deible, Base is laminated Koa and Gabon ebony. To my knowlege there are only two box calls made from Toon wood. This one and one made my Lamar Williams. I don't have pics of Lamars' call, but, I will be picking that one up in Nashville, also.

Nice wood, Bill!  I wonder if it would make a scratch box!
Congratulations on a beautiful call.
Maybe I can see the other one in person!

Tom

It is considered musical grade wood. I suspect, it would make an excellent scratch box. I am trying to locate some more, and if or when I do, I will be sure to send you some.

Toon wood - Toon was introduced in 1918 for plantation use. It grows to 50 feet tall and reaches over two feet in diameter. The wood is very lightweight (specific gravity .35), and is reddish brown. The tree is also called “Australian red cedar”, because of the strong aromatic cedar scent of the wood. It carves and turns particularly well. There are several stands in Hawai‘i forest plantations.

The call pictured from Niles looks very nice indeed, hope to see pictures of the call Lamar made you as well Bill.  *up*

Bill would be well advised to keep watch for a couple of big-eared characters in an old, smokey Toyota Tacoma. *lol*
