Title: Goin deer hunting, need advice!
Post by: Ticeman on September 23, 2009, 04:00:33 PM
Well, here goes nuttin. I have been putting this chapter of my life off for some time, but I think it's time. *cheers*

With a declining pheasant population, I need something to hunt in the winter, soo....I'm gonna start deer hunting this year *cheers* I live in the land of the giants so it's time to "man up" and get after em, a tag cost me only $27.50, so I'm buying a few. I have shot one deer in my life, a button buck, 5 yrs ago, and it was the most boring thing I'd ever done, shot it with a .44 Ruger, then had to drag the stupid thing up a darn embankment by myself in 8" of snow cussing like a sailor. >:( telling myself I'd never do it again.

Left it on my buddies doorstep, never gutted it, so i don't know how to do that either. *fall*

So...I'll be shooting shotgun, what kinda slug should i buy? just planning on using my 12 ga, smoothbore, not rifled, and what kinda choke should I use? I will be going in January for the rifle season in southern Iowa, so I'll use my .270 for that.

Put up a stand or no stand? I plan on just shooting it, gutting it, dropping it off at the locker. Do I need to skin it or does the butcher do it? questions man....many questions. ???

I prefer 12 smooth bore full choke.

Mike
Not sure if Muzzleloaders are legal at the same time as shotguins but the new inlines are better and can reach out a lot further then a shotgun.Maybe get  one for a decent price and try that
If not I hear the Light Field slugs are real good

I grew up slug gun hunting in NY before they changed it to rifle and we always had good luck with Brenneke slugs in smoothbores. When you hit a deer with a slug it really put a hurting on them.

I wish I knew more about slug hunting..  but I don't, but I do know, the locker plant should skin it all that for you!!!

I'm kind of like you, except I like the meat so I struggle on!!!  I hate field dressing a deer.  I get sick every time :(

I do know, slug guns nowadays are just almost as accurate as rifles!!  They'll definitely put the hurt on a deer!

Hey, I always liked what Brenneke had to offer when I was shooting my grandpas smoothbore.  They make a pretty good rifled slug.  I have 3 boxes of their Black Magic Magnum, give me a shout if you want them, you can have them to see if you like 'em.  I just do muzzle loader and bow now.  Or if you're feeling frisky, I see that Nitro makes some slugs!!  I think they say 4" of drop at 200yrds.
