I am flopping the turkey calling contest.. I had many people PM me when I posted information about doing a calling contest. Many of the PM's stated that people wouldn't participate because they had too much to risk or that there were a lot of great call makers but not a lot of great callers.. this is not me stating this but others and I refused to believe the comments because I know some folks on this site who are much better than myself..This is why I thought an anonymous contest would fit the bill.. anyways...There will be no calling contest.. we had over 500 looks but only 2 people willing to show there skills..I was really excited at seeing others calling skills...Maybe when we get closer to the turkey season...

I think it sounds like a great idea :) As long as it stays uncomplicated and fair!

There would have to be some basic guidelines like length of sound file, perhaps certain calls (i.e. yelp, cluck, purr...). I would possibly be interested. You could do it head to head style and have a brackett...could be interesting.

You forgot tube calls. *up* I would take a stab at that catagory. I am no pro that is for sure but it sound like this could be kind of fun.

I have but one question...why would anyone want to be proficient at producing a "Putt"?? Putting that in the contest call sequence is "alarming"! ROTFLMBO

putt can be used to get a big gobbler to pop up his head when he is on a hard track chasing a hen..i have used it numerous times.. one could say why not whistle or yell but you never no if they will instinctively fly at that... if you putt all birds will pop there heads straight up and boom...good night...just a simple call contest and putt is a turkey vocalization...we can change to cutt if you cannot putt...

No need to change it for me cause I aint playing anyway. I just can't compete with you guys. :'( Just wondered why the "putt". Thanks for giving your take on that.

The Putt is a funny call in a calling contest. But I can easliy do it. But how can anyone tell a sharp cluck from a putt. The putt or a sharp cutt on a trumpet is pure turkey in sound. Too me only turkey can out do it.

The only way to tell the difference in a putt or a one note sharp cluck in the woods is whether birds are running or not... People often mistake gobblers clucking for putting. I have had quite a few get in range, to where they know the "hen" was and cluck once or twice. If she isn't in sight or making a call, he will go the other way.

Old Trumpetyelper----guess the most common noise he hears from turkey birds is the "ALARM PUTT."
He probablly has that sound mastered from all the experiences he has had in the past *peep*

Sorry you are not having much luck with calling contest. I can do the putt and yelping well on a trumpet or wingbone but the cackling is a hard call on a trumpet.

Hopefully we can get a calling contest or even just a calling demonstration thread in the future...

I guess as a so called callmaker I need to repond to this. I've been following it since it started. I for one have dial up and to even upload a picture it takes lots of time. Second I don't even know how to make a sound file more less put it on this computer forum. I make a call to use calling turkeys around here. After over 3 years of making calls I've learned everyone has a different opinion of how a call should sound. One person picks a certain call and the next person puts it last in their line for choice. When someone from out east describes how they want their call to sound, they want it more raspy than say folks from the south or southwest. Around here people want a young clear sound. I personally like deep raspy as well as a young soft clear note.
I entered one contest and it was this year on here for a turkey contest. Next thing I know I've got health problems to deal with in the family and myself and can't contribute. I let the team down and my spring hunt was a shambles. Everyone has a reason. Mine has nothing to do with a contest or this forum and anyone on it. I'm not the best nor claim to be. I leave that to the people who want to be. I just make calls and try to make them the way they have been made around here since the 1800's. Then try to add a sound to suit the ear of the peson ordering it. Another thing I have learned fooling around on this computer, is that a call sounds different over a microphone than it does up close and personal just as it sounds different from 50 yards away. I'm not sure a recorded sound file is a safe and fair way to judge a call or caller. Don't get me wrong I'm definately not against it. I'm just not interested in entering one. If I send out a call and it don't suit the person, I'll do my best to make it right. That's the best I can do. That happened once and before it's over that person will have a call from me that he is happy with. If a body wants to take one of my calls and use it in a contest, I'll happily oblidge them in any way I can. I guess I feel if people want to enter a contest with any call of their choice that is their choice. It's not necessarily the callmakers fault they do or don't. Nor is it a reflection of a callmaker if he don't enter a contest with one of their own calls. I'm sure each callmaker feels. or should feel, they do the best at making and tuning a call. So, what is the reason to enter a contest except to prove something. I for one don't feel the need to prove anything. That being said, I do and would enjoy listening to others call and how they use calls of different sorts.
I don't mean of offend you or anyone else. Just my $.02

I think this is where it actually started from.............. ;D Having different folks run calls, whether they build them are not... :) I'm guilty of not posting a sound file also..........no excuse....I know how.

I've always been a proponent of sound files...If you can't run a call then how can you build them and know your sound is right? I would be glad to participate...

There seems to be a ton of discussion on the "putt". There are two types of "putt". The ALARM "putt" and the normal putt. The normal putt is merely a softer version of a cluck. I would compare it closely to the "bubble cluck" that you hear hen's give on the roost when their waking up in the morn. The "alarm" putt, well we all know what that one is.

Scott thanks for the input.. i acually learned to gobble from watching and listening to your youtube video... I agree that making a sound file is not for everyone..and i do understand that some people can make a better sound file that others, but if your a good caller there is little you can do to screw that up on a sound file.. its not like you cant record this numerous times... i am just saying there are tons of individuals on this sight who can.. this contest was completely anonymous... i did that to eliminate any hesitation that someone might not sound good and therefore lost business..really it didn't need to be a contest at all but instead just hearing some calling.. we will try again in the future.. I think that people can distinguish themselves by putting there turkey sound out for the public to hear.. because as you stated everyone has a different ear for what a turkey might sound like... no biggie though.. there is no reason for anyone to feel bad for not participating. there will be more opportunity. please remember that i was recieving PM's with explanations of why this sound file won't work.. this was not my interpretation.. i took these pms and tried to make an anonymous contest so that I could eliminate as many hesitations as possible.. nothing is ever going to be completely fair. there are always limitations whether it be the judges ear, hardware, or whatever..
