Title: Crow call Guess the wood?
Post by: Skull Point on July 28, 2011, 09:20:40 PM: I got this wood from a friend in Mississippi he sent it to me to try out on a call.
This call is headed back to the gent that sent me the peaces.
It was a fence post he didn't know how long but its way old.
It has 40 or more growth rings..Turned like butter but hard as a rock..

How did it smell when you turned it? I have worked with this stuff before and would agree it is or can be hard as a rock. Sure makes a nice looking call. *up*

Smelt like what it is *lol* the finish on it is just a few coats of wax...Cause nothing will penatrate into it..That is a hint.. *dance*

YOU HAD TO "PLANT" THEM IN THE GROUND WHILE THE WOOD WAS STILL GREEN , JUST TO DRIVE THE STAPLES IN. ONCE THE BARK CAME OFF, THE OUTSIDE WOULD TURN WHITE AND GET SO HARD, DRIVING THE STAPLES WAS OF NO USE, THEY WOULD JUST "MASH UP AND BEND UP". MY GUESS IS LOCUST.

Post by: SurroundedByOutlaws on March 27, 2012, 09:01:29 PM: Well since it was a fence post and if it was from Mississippi it has to be heart pine, more commonly known in the south as lighter wood; its the only wood in the south that i know of that doesn't rot, is hard as a rock, has a pretty cool kind of smell, and when you split it or chop it is somewhat soft like butter
