Title: My wood cup runeth over..
Post by: firedup on July 23, 2011, 09:08:15 PM
Seems like this is the month for wood.  First I rolled onto one of my job sites and someone had dumped a load of sugar maple blocks in the road during the nite.  They had bucked it down into small pieces to hand load.  I figured free firewood for the shop so I loaded it back up, took it home and ran it thru the spitter. Imagine my suprise, most every trunk piece came out with some real nice curl. All short blocks...such a waste. This would have been a high dollar log if cut rite.  Next, a co-worker calls me and says there is a big walnut down near his place and if I was interested I could have it.  Ok, don't need more walnut but whats a little sweat and effort.  Again, big surprise!  25 feet of some real nice butternut. Bout 20-24"+ on the base.  At least 3 good 8ft saw logs.  Running a back road last week and found another nice butternut down after a storm. Not as big but still worth getting a section or 2.  AND THEN...my FIL calls and asks if I want some apple.  Well.....YEAH!  For any of you that source your own wood, found apple rarely turns out well, Too small, dead in center, nails, ect. Usually lucky to get a few decent pieces.  Not this time. Got a nice straight 8ft+ section that is about 17" on the base.  All the top went to firewood but got some nice crotch pieces to do something with.  So ....after a trip to the sawyer and some drying time (read that 2+ years) I should have a ton of nice material to work with.   ;D

Some of the maple.
