This tree fell today in my neighors yard. I have looked at all hickory trees that I know of around here but the leaf puzzles me..The tree is hollow from stump to about 6 ft in air about 16 inches across trunk.

Looks like Butternut....that would explain the trunk being hollow too, most butternut trees are standing dead because of blight

We call 'em Spignut Hickory around here, but I've heard them called Pignut, too.

Definately looks like a hickory nut to me . A butternut (white walnut) nut looks like a peach pit . I love eating hickory nuts ! I make one mean hickory nut pie that is better than the best pecan pie you can buy ! It takes alot of patience to shuck 'em though !
