Bruce go to www.ky3.com and look at the damage. Less than an hour from us, most of the major part of the town is gone. The twister(s) was on the ground for more than 4 miles.
It has been a few years since a twister did this much damage to us here in Southwest MO. The hospital took a direct hit and is probably a total loss!
There are two different areas of the town that took a direct hit. One was the busiest part of the town. They are really concerned about how many fatalities.
Many of you may remember Pierce City and Stockton several years ago... Too close for comfort here. This storm produced 81 mph winds at our house. Everything appears fine here, but I heard there was damage in our town too.
This is the strangest Spring I can ever remember!

I just read that 89 people perished in that storm.....
They are starting door to door searches this morning..
1/2 mile wide and 6 miles of terror.... :-\

For you not around this area, to let you know some more, it has done nothing but stormed and rained all morning. I feel so sorry for the personnel in Joplin. Another round of severe storms is moving into their area.
Here is what a lot of Joplin MO looks like right now... so depressing...

I work in the department of surgery at St. Lukes Hospital west of St. Louis about 20 miles. We had a violent storm hit us this morning just as we were finishing a heart surgery procedure. We elected to hold our patient in the safety of the OR until power was restored. The operating rooms are usually centrally located in a hospital and are a pretty safe place for both patient and staff. It was really ugly outside and thoughts of Joplin crossed my mind. Prayers sent from your neighbors in Missouri.

That photograph and others I've seen on the net today, including the stormchaser video of the tornado, reminds me of the twister that hit Midwest City, OK several years ago. It was an F5 tornado, and this one must have been an F5 as well. I watched or actually all you could do is listen to a video of some folks caught in a Fastrip store when it hit. It was terrifying just to listen to it. We had a small tornado hit our community about 3 weeks ago, but I can not imagine waking up to what the folks in Joplin woke up to this morning.
Our prayers are with that whole community.

In a normal spring there are 500 tornados. This spring there have been 1000 and counting! Usually 20 cause major damage. This year thus far 50! Prayers sent from MI.
