Title: Frustrated...
Post by: shad309 on April 24, 2011, 10:07:43 AM
Yesterday couldn't have been nicer for an opening day hunt! Weather was nice & the birds were gobbling like nuts.

My problem is with the IL state law of shooting times. By the time my bird worked in, it was past legal shooting time. I had to watch my bird strut & gobble in front of me for over 20 minutes and could do nothing but watch  :'(

What is the point of a 1pm cutoff for hunting?!?!?! That's one of the dumbest rules our state has besides the F.O.I.D card  >!!

I always thought it was so people didn't bump the hens when they were on the nest, that's the same law here in PA, but this year they made it that you can only hunt till noon the first two weeks, then the last two weeks, you can hunt all day! Hang in there buddy, you'll get into them! *up*

WI used to be till noon but About 5 or so years ago they changed it to all day. Either way I have a hard time getting anything going much past noon. About the only time I see birds later is if I am set up on the edge of a field were they feed just before bedtime.

Yes I would rather have it that way because you can hunt the whole season.  Our tags are only good for 1 week or season in the 5 week season.  We also have to apply for our tags.

Forgot to add that we can apply for up to 3 tags. And they are county specific.

ALL DAY long and ALL SEASON long here in NC!!  Studies have shown all day hunting has no effect on turkey populations.  You can call for afternoon birds, but they rarely answer. BUT, they WILL come into a call. You have to be patience and expect him to come in anytime. Only call when you first set up. Don't call too loud or often. If you call again, make sure it is well before you decide to move. Wait at least 45-50 minutes between moves. Move about the distance you think your calling can be heard at , then set up and call. I killed my first bird doing this. Roc  *up* *up*
