Deer season in Ca started Aug 8th and closes Sept 20th this year. I had been holding out for this huge 5x5 blacktail that we had seen before the opener. He is simply one of the biggest blacktails I've seen. A week ago we spotted him about 5 miles away from our area. He had moved onto land we can't access. So late in our season I was stuck trying to locate another deer in our area. Yesterday afternoon we hunted our area with no luck, didn't even see any does. I was headed back to the truck about 15 min before dark when I ran into this deer. I had wanted to take a deer with my old Winchester 94 for years but always chickened out and took my 30-06. I've shot my 30-30 alot at the range and even use it for plinking so I was comfortable with the distance this deer stood. I ranged him at 200 yards. I know thats a long poke for that gun but that new Hornady Revolution ammo dropped him where he stood. It was a great end to my season.

Good way to close out the season my friend. Too bad you couldn't get that big one you told me about. He'll be that much bigger next season.

We were not stand hunting, these deer are to hard to pattern. They tend to change travel routes randomly. Country is open with oak choked draws. So we just spot and stalk from ridge tops. My buddy wanted to head for another draw before dark. Because of my bad knee I was thinking more of getting back to the truck. Lucky me!
