Part of responsible game management and conservation involves gathering data of all game species. These pictures illustrate in part some of what we are doing to learn more about bears and their activities. During the winter, sows are tranquilized and fitted with radio collars and tags,so that their movements are monitored throughout the rest of the year. Here my friend Blaine Anthony, entertains the cubs while the biologists do their job.

I know this sound like a redneck story but, 3 years ago I was turkey hunting with my brother in Arkansas and we were riding down logging road and came around a curve and a sow blackbear run accross from us and she had two cubs running behind her. She only went about 30 yard off the road and stopped. Man I was on the back of the bike and wasn't very happy about it. Well there was a log sticking out into the road and when my brother (driving) went around the log I looked down and there was 3 more smaller cubs laying there. Now that SOW wasn't none to happy about us being that close to them cubs and about the time I yelled cubs and pointed down my brother gunned that 4 wheeler and I darn near came off of that bike. I think I aged many years within a matter of seconds. Well we drove only about a 1/4 of a mile from that spot and he stopped the bike and said this is where we are going to hunt. Man I wasn't none to happy about that sow. Well we get the guns and start walking out thur the woods and about that time my brother yells LOOK OUT and Takes off running to the WEST. Well I take off running EAST. Then I hear him laughing as hard as he could. Me I was burning up some boot leather. I stop and He finially gets it out and asked why would you run that way when I went the other direction. All I could say between breaths, was if, That Bear was going to Eat a Fat White Boy and I had a 50% chance it was going to be YOU.
Some memories are for a lifetime and that was one of them. I'd have shot his sorry $#% but I'd have to told MaMa. Great pictures. Sorry about the piggybacking on your thread.
