Can someone help explain to me how to insert pictures?

You need to put them on a host site like photo bucket. Once you do that you can mouse over the pic and copy the bottom link that pops up and paste it into your post here

How do you get to appear as an inserted picture instead of a link?

It will show up as a link until you preview the post or actually post it
