Title: Scroll saws

anyone use scroll saws for call making or do most of you use band saws? I'm on the fence of which to buy, I can see good and bad with both.

Being on a limited budget I thought that I might get straighter cuts out of a scroll saw for the same price as a cheaper band saw?

Any thoughts?

Take a look at a Delta band saw. $100 at lowes, been working fine for years in my shop

 The drawback to using a scroll saw is that you can't cut wood that is very thick . You lose cutting power and the fine control of a scroll saw when you use woodstock that is very thick . I agree with Gregg , choose a band saw , at least 10 " .

A bandsaw is great to have for resawing!If you have access ton cutting some wood, you can make your own lumber.

They is a 101 uses for a bandsaw, one of the most valuable tools in my shop.

Shad,  I hear you but as others have said and I agree, get a band saw, even if a 'smaller' bench type.  The band saw for your needs has far more flexibility in what it offers over the long run.  Look at it this way, the band saw can do anything and much more than a scroll saw, but the reverse is not so.

I have and use both for call making.  If I had to choose just one though, it would without a doubt be a bandsaw.  The only thing I use the scroll saw for is to rough shape my lids and that is only because the blade I use on the bandsaw is too wide for the radius.  I use the bandsaw to rough cut lumber, resaw thick stock, shape my boxes, and cut my inlays.  Come to think of it I do just about everything on the bandsaw except radius the paddle and cut the inlay grooves.....I think it is pretty obvious which way I lean...

Actually I lied.  I even start the radius for my paddle on the bandsaw...LOL!!
