Title: NWTF Opinions?
Post by: shad309 on March 07, 2011, 11:21:53 AM
I've never been a member and have been thinking about joining up. I know it seems to be a thing with many turkey hunters that you either love em or hate em.

What I want to know is this:
What are the advantages of being a member?

shad:
it's the number one conservation organization promoting the sport that we all love. i have always felt that if i were a duck hunter i should support du or the other wetlands conservation groups. as a turkey hunter i feel the same. like them or hate them or anything in between they support our cause. i would feel guilty not supporting the nwtf. any time i have fought to change our turkey hunting requlations or seasons i have always been supported by nwtf. this benefited me and my passion but it also benefited all others who love to hunt turkeys. you will hear much good and bad about any organization but nwtf has done more for the repopulation of the american wild turkey than any other group.
i'm not an employee or even a local chapter chairman or commitee member. i was a local chairman for du for 25 years and felt it the least i could do to give back to a sport i love.
i hope this post does not turn into a recital of everone's grumblings about nwtf and hope that it is looked at from the positive. no organization is going to be perfect in all eyes. shad i'm sorry if this sounds like preaching but had to say this much to get my thoughts across. hope most agree. sooner

Right on Marlin !!! The NWTF is the group who is responsible for helping each state renew their populations to the point that we can hunt this majestic bird . If it weren't for the efforts of the NWTF there would be way less land to hunt them on and the numbers would not be where they are now . I highly suggest that everyone who takes part in this sport of hunting the wild turkey , needs to become and stay a member of the NWTF . We probably wouldn't be hunting them if we didn't have this great organization to lead the charge in conservation and management .

Marlin sums it up pretty good and many may loath any such organization, but in the end it comes down to a personal decision and how one feels about the bigger picture and the benefits that result for the sport, birds and habitat, etc.  As a professional (landscape architect and golf architect) I belong to society organizations and I do so with certain caution/trepidation, but nonetheless I know the overall benefit overrides my personal issues and I am okay with that.

Good luck with your decison Shad.

They do some really good things, but they can also be very frustrating too.

I see far more money going into pocket books and wallets than into the bird, sport or conservation.  I was a long time member as was my wife...we are no longer.  I havn't seen any of my local chapters do jack in my area anywhere other than ask for money or donations.  I also do not like how business is conducted with in the org.  I'll leave it at that, probably already said too much as it is.

thanks for the opinions so far but I'm gonna try & rope this one in a little.

Other than what has been stated already, is there any benefit for me to be a member other than the magazine and a sticker? Do you at least get a discount to Nationals or anything?

Shad

For the first time I can remember, they let NWTF members in for free (at nationlas) as long as you showed a membership card. That's a plus in my book!
