I have attempted a few times to use a mouth call without success. I have been told to try a youth model. Which brand should I begin with? I really don't want to spend $20+ on a multi pack or $20 with shipping for 1 mouth call.
I'm looking for a wallet friendly call to try & learn. If I can get notes and over my gag reflex I will step into a good call.

... I've heard & read ----------- allot of guys talkin' 'bout the Hooks smaller sized calls ...

I read that on another forum but then I noticed every one of the recommendations came from someone with a Hook's banner....

Hey Shad, I started on the Quaker Boy "Double D" Its a beginers call and is very easy to use. I think I gave $4 at wally world for it. I couldnt get the hang of the calls until I tried it and after I used it the other calls just came along so easy. Its a small frame call and doesnt give you that gagging feeling. Good Luck

Check out Tom Teasers. The will build any of their calls on a youth frame!

Just checked out their website. Gotta say the video makes it hard to resist buying the calls. Man if every callmaker put video on theire websites I might go broke quicker *wha*

Shaft I've had some luck with the Primo dome ones, but I just cannot get them to work.
Let me know if you find something!
Morgan knows a guy that builds them and he's highly recommended. His name has slipped my mind right now...

For store bought ones I liked those Cane Creek Calls a lot.

Shad, Blacky who pops in here from time to time has a good variety of reasonably priced calls in various sizes and cutts. I'm sure he would try to work with you to find the right call. I have been using them for years. Also I don't have any connection to them but I also like Hooks calls. The Sassy girl is a very good call. I get most of mine made by a good friend and former calling champion. He recently moved so I don't know his status on call making. Pm me and maybe I can get you guys together if yer interested. He was doing something like 5 for $15 shipped. That is dirt cheap for a good call. LT

I know Scott Hooks personally and he makes some of the best mouth calls available. Plus his calls are smaller and fits the mouth better. I personally like his Executioner and Devastator calls.

I appreciate all the info!!!

Shad, start with a two reed model. Duals are easier to learn on. Leave the trips and quads to the pros.
I get dual reed calls from Wallyworld and trim them down to fit comfortably. Don't use them much anymore though.

I was at BassPro Saturday & picked up a HS small frame out of the clearance bin for $1.99 figured it would be ok to start with. I put it in my mouth and rode home 2 hours with it there and drank my Coke. I didn't gag once! After we got home I started trying to get some sounds. The baby started crying, cats were howling, & I thought the dog was gonna *poo* on the floor ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO
Looks like I got lots of practicing to do *lol*
