Title: a drop dead unique piece of mineral poplar
Post by: jmck on February 14, 2011, 02:21:57 PM: Here is a very unique colored piece of Poplar. I was contacted be a memebr to see if I would be interested in making a pair of calls from this wood. He described the wood ,but boy was I elated when I saw pictures of it. The stuff has unreal color in it. I jumped at the chance.
Got the wood in and then couldnt decide on the right combo for the lid and base. I contacted a few of you here for help, I wanted to make it right becuase there was no more of this fine stuff available in case I changed my mind.
Anyway, I lit into em. Decided on Malpe lid and base, made the inlays from the scrap from the Poplar for the lid .
Things were going great about 2 weeks into the project when I came into the shop one day and low and behold, one of them had checked on the end. It was too much to trim off. So I called Steve and gave him the bad news. Looks like I had a checked call so the decesion on which one to send him would be easy.
Then....three days later I went into the shop again, and guess what...the other had checked, but near as much as the first.
I called Steve agin and we discussed what to do. We came up with super glue, mask the cracks off, build it up, then sand it sommoth to stop the check and we would both be happy with what resulted.
The calls sound great, and the color is flat out unreal. Took pics indoors today. Wish I could have done it outdoors to give justice to the color in the fine wood.

Looks like you can still see some of the purple coloration in it.

Defies logic......thought that was real dry.

I can't wait to get this one out in the sun to see all the colors. I'll try to get some pictures. Jeff this is the call I will hunt with this spring. It sounds great.
