It has been a while since I offered a field grade trumpet. Here are a couple remniscent of the Penn's woods yelpers I plan to be offering soon. One has a delrin mouthpiece, the other has a brass band and giraffe bone mouthpiece and both are made from zebra wood. A lot of hunters indicate they want a cheaper call to learn on, so I spent some time developing these. The internals have been changed on these 8" calls to produce high pitched kee-kees, yelps, clucks, nice young hen to mature hen by extending the sound chamber by cupping the bell.

Kenny, Dave will have to answer your question from his callmaker perspective. But from a consumer. It looks like a call that the design is simpler and thus less time. The woods used are less expensive. That puts a call in the $$ of affordability that most can afford. I know a lot of people want a decent call that costs less than $100 but they are hard to find. If more calll builders would be like Dave and make a more affordable call as well as their premimum grade I know a lot of us would appreciate it. Just my 2 cents worth!

Maybe it was a misnomer calling these field grade. I guess I shall have to come up with a unique name, Battenkill or something, after one of my trout fishing streams, or maybe just classic, I don't know.
As a call maker it has always been my desire to offer affordable calls to the average hunter. When a piece of burl of a size adequate to build a trumpet from costs $40-50, a piece of Ivory costs $40-50 it puts the price near $100 before you even start. One catch with a turning tool and you are buying more material.
Buffalo horn and exotic woods are cheaper than burls and Ivory, therefore can be produced somewhat cheaper.
This style I have shown, uses a smaller blank than my standard trumpet which allows me more options when purchasing wood or using "scrap" I have already in my shop. The simpler design can be sanded, turned and finshed with greater ease and is somewhat less time consuming, therefore can be offered at a lower price.
As a call maker, I am also a "tinkerer", always changing up this and that to see what effect it has on sound. This is a great little platform to experiment with and to try out different ideas, and even if there was no interest in this design I would still continue to experiment .
The idea to make this call actually came from a customer who was looking for something in a classic design, straight bell shape like the Penns woods yelpers, and from a converstion I had with another callmaker who makes some premium trumpets, a machinist who does impeccable work.
My only desire in offering this call is to provide the average hunter a somewhat more affordable call, another option.

BIG kudos to you for answering the question on the "Field Grade" trumpet without getting bent out of shape. And you answered it quite well too! I think it was a legitimate question and I just wanted to tell you that you handled it like a gentleman. Nice looking trumpet too! ;)

I agree....that was a great answer. In todays world making an affordable call doesn't mean that you necessarily have to skip things that make for a good call. Using alternative materials and less expensive woods can still produce a quality call.

Yes, it is a great answer MIKE, a lot easier to answer CLEANLY,and NOT get Bent out of Shape, when you are not being attacked by other forum members, now isnt it. ;)

Two good looking yelpers.
I remember several years back, when trumpets were just starting to take the hunting world by storm, the price of some where higher than many offered today. They had delrin mouthpieces, cheaper wood, and a rifle casing.
