Title: another day sculling a few ducks
Post by: jmck on January 28, 2011, 09:25:40 AM
Have gone less this year than any in the past so far. Gave myself the day off yesterday and took off with some of the gang to harass some good ducks down in Alabama. We hit the river and started glassing and immediatlly saw a float of OVER 500 canvasbacks. It was on !!!
We set the sculler in the water about 1/4 mile away or so and went to rowing. Wasnt long before I was right in the middle of em *bannana*. Canvasbacks all around the boat, feeding ,sleeping and totally oblvisious to what we were learking amungst them. Picked out some real white ones and made a few more strokes and told the gunner to set up and look at 12 o'clock ---they were less than 15 yards. He got his and I got mine. We ended up with 5 canvasbacks, everyone got thiers and this Greater---they are pretty too.
We spent the day looking and glassing for redheads and wiegons but all we saw were gadwalls and tons and tons of Cans that we couldnt kill any more of. In many years of sculling---I have never seen the floats on Canvasbacks that we saw yeserday. We took pics early before we got the last two---didnt realize that till this morn.

That sure sounds like a lot of work. I remember now why I quit duck hunting.

the little boat looks like a cross bewteen a kyack(spelling???) and a layout boat. It is wide and real flat to the water so it cant be seen

Sounds like a great morning on the water, I always liked hunting them that way. We were hunting a bay one morning when the wind came up and I wasn't sure we would make it back without getting swamped. We finally beached on the flats, and then had a long drag to get out of there, it was a lot of work that morning...But man, the hunting was awesome!
