Does anybody have a video out on how to play a trumpet? I can get a decent sound from them, but not satisfied with it yet, I can't find anybody near me that can show how to play one. Any help would be appreciated...

Michael Buckner has one on Youtube. Judge for yourself how good it is but it really helped me!

I am right where you are. I bought a trumpet at the NWTF midwest competetion and just like you can get decent sound out of it but nothing consistant so hopefully someone out there can help.

Here are some Basic Instructions, that should help you along with Trumpet's, and Bone calls, as any Yelper type call.
If you are right handed, do the following:
Hold the call in your right hand, between your thumb and forefinger, bring your middle finger INTO the bell of the call, that will help you manipulate/control, the amount of Air brought into the caller.
Cup your left hand over your right, to form a Sound Chamber.
By Manipulating the amount and pressure of air drawn into the caller,WITH YOUR MIDDLE FINGER, you will learn to control the air, and achieve the " TONES ", one looks for in the wood'z.
PULL the Air easy, VERY LITTLE Air is needed, MUCH LESS, than one may think, MUCH LESS.
It will take TIME, and a memory of HOW, that Purrticular TONE/CALL, say yelp, or Cluck,was achieved.
Relax, concentrate on the Amount of air, the Size, shape of the sound chamber, go slow, and deliberate at this point, remember, you are teaching yourself, so go slow, and be deliberate.
REMEMBER, RELAX, RELAX, RELAX, your Hands, and your Lips, PULL the AIR, ," THROUGH " your lip, by the dropping of the Jaw in a relaxed state while keeping the air seal will allow one to acheive the TWO NOTE, DROP, for the Yelp. " YEEAWK " YEEAWK", be deliberate, and slow, RELAX, RELAX, RELAX.
Kee-Kee, Kee-Kee Run:
To achieve this, Pull with ONE SOLID BREATH, the air from your diaphram, use your diaphram to MODULATE THE AIR, like a stairway, up, UP,UP !!!
Playing the Trumpet is an Artform, and one that takes many hours with the call in hand, stuck in your face.
TWO VERY IMPOTANT WORDS, LESS, and MORE, with TRUMPET CALLS, or all Air Operated Yelpers and bone calls, LESS is MORE.

Spur, I must be disyelpic. I hold mine just the opposite. I do have to agree with Spur on the rest. When I first started playing trumpets, I was told it is just like kissing your wife. So since I love my wife immensely, I'd rear back and plant one on her. They neglected to tell me to kiss her like I didn't want to wake her up from sleeping. By "planting one on her", you do several things. 1) most of the time you get a "thwack" sound, not a two note sound. 2) You run out of air real quick and about three yelps is all you can do. 3) You lose consistancy.
Start off trying to see how quietly you can play your trumpet. You want to be able to make a little light "EEE" sound, then drop your jaw slightly to form the "AWK". Close your eyes and imagine you are Louis Armstrong playing a tear jerker of a blues song. Once you master this, you can move up to jazz.

I gave a trumpet to my neighbor the other day without instructions..... He came knocking on the door and asked me what he was doing wrong. He proceeded to blow on that thing till he was blue in the face and me about to choke from laughing so hard ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO He figured since it was a "trumpet" it should be played like one. *lol*
I told him to kiss it like he had to kiss a big ole ugly chick when he wasn't drunk... He nailed it on the first pucker ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO

Great instructions and tips guys. I pulled out my new trumpet this morning after reading through all this and low and behold there is a huge improvement using all your info. Since I bought it and even more so now I have wanted to pick up a couple more to compare little differences in calls and how they may sound different. Guess I'll have to sock away a few buck and just make that happen. Thanks

All great info and helpful as well. I was asked to clarify a few things, I will try.
When I say pull the Air through your lip, I mean while the Mouthpiece is setting ON, your Bottom lip, with the angled mouthpiece, NOT STRAIGHT, ( I use an angle cut).
MOST people, PUT the mouthpiece IN, they're mouth, I, do not, I lay it, on my bottom lip, not in my mouth.
I LAY, the mouthpiece ON MY BOTTOM LIP, and PULL the Air through my lip, not, OVER it, get my meaning?
By doing this, I can control the air greater, it is a learned thing, from practise, but you can tell the difference after many hours of playing the two different CUT'S, of mouthpieces. The angled cut, vs the round, is something you have to learn, you can pick both up, and play them the same, but after practise and TIME with the two different callers, you will tell the difference w/o a doubt.
What it actually IS DOING, the (angle cut), is creating a larger airway, w/o, enlargeing the inner diameter hole, so, you have greater range of tones with this cut, vs a none cut mouthpiece, because you now have more SURFACE AREA OPEN TO MANIPULATE, very little, but look at the size of the hole in the mouthpiece, takes very little to change a tone, and this opens it up to great ranges of playing. Playing an angled cut mouthpiece, is harder to control than a round, but more versatile in my oppinion, and, allows for greater kee kee, and Higher note to lower note DROPS, in tone, and Vice Versus.
When people say drop your jaw, they mean exactly that, you do not hardly notice it after learning it, like a kee kee, one day, you just have it, same with this. You do not lose the seal, you just simply drop your jaw in the note, to creat the two note yelp.
It is not drastic, just a movemennt, like holding a cigarette in your mouth, and opening and closing your jaw, while the cigarette is still in between your lips, no air loss, but you dropped your jaw creating a bigger sound chamber " IN ", your mouth.
Picture a Drinking straw, between two pieces of bread, flush, with the ends of the bread, thats how I PULL AIR THROUGH my lips, most, put the straw, past flush, and IN, they're mouth, get my meaning ?

Neet to see how a lot of us play trumpets differently. I play a lot like Spur and I'm going to change up how I play and see if it makes a difference.
I was EXTREMELY guilty of blowing through my first one. Tim Clayton sold me my first trumpet. He knew I had it and about 4 hours later he posted... Porter you done blowing through the trumpet yet?

I've contacted Alan before, he said that he ran out and wont be getting more made. I have a copy (just have to find it...) and it is a great starter. Other than the visual it is much of the same info that Spur gave.
