Scotch-Brite pad to loosen it up and a rag to wipe it off.

Lightly dampen a cloth with water and gently wipe it off. After it dries lightly sand it before reapplying new chalk.

Chalk is water soluble, and alcohol can leave spirits behind . Ever notice that smell that lingers with alcohol? Just don't wet your rag very much , it will wipe clean as new. If the grain rises a little , then sand it lightly with 120 grit on the underside of the lid .
