As Zumer knows, I've been messing around with scratch boxes lately, and just happened to notice that the piece of white chalk I received with Mr. Shively's Super Yelper has a much different coefficient of friction than the brown chalk I have from Primos.
I think the scratchers sound better with the white chalk than the brown chalk.
Just wondering if you have a chalk manufacturer preference, seems to me while chalk specifically made for friction calls may be oil-free, they may not all be the same.

I like the oil free yellow chalk. It seems to be good on all calls!
-
I hate the brown chalk from primos & hs strut- sounds like crap & doesnt last. I haven't found any I really like.
-
Railroad chalk and the red primos has worked good too.
Shad if you think HS is bad, try the quaker boy... horrible.. .it's green I believe....
-
Can you recommend a vendor to purchase railroad chalk?
-
I get it with my calls :( I have a huge supply I could send you some. More than I'll ever need. PM me if you are interested!
-
At one time I used to have a big chunk of blue chalk that I got at a hardware store. Haven't been able to find it anymore. That stuff was awesome!
-
I bought a box of yellow school chalk that should last a lifetime. I keep half a stick in a medicine bottle in my vest.

The orange-colored calls fly into your mailbox everyday, I could see you needing a room on your house just to hold all the chalk.
Very kind offer. PM sent.

I think my mailbox has been acting up lately... or else it was getting tired, but somehow my chalk collection is almost as big as my call collection *lol*

I got chalk from a member on OG and it's working out great. It's the Orange half moon style but I don't know the manufacturer. Looks like the carpenter's chalk.
I don't like the railroad chalk or any of the "big name" manufacturers.

That is what Mr. Wineman and I swear by. It can be obtained from a few old Ace Hardware stores, or you can by it in bulk (72) to a case. This is the lowest price I have found.

I always heard the brown had a dye that glazed. I had a piece of brown one time and I think it had oil in it. It did not work like the blue carpenters chalk. May have been in my head but I went back to the blue.

Ain't nutting wrong with the blue.....the red I had trouble with though....
-
I use Dixon Railroad Chalk...comes in lots of colors

Looked at my turkey tupperware storage box, and found the rest of the brown chalk I mentioned at the beginning -- its Knight & Hale, not Primos. I had a couple pieces in an old Primos mouth call case and thought it was from them.
Thanks for the feedback guys, confirms all chalk isn't created equal.

Thanks Tim. Can't wait to get this brown crap I have rubbed all over off that walnut / butternut long box you built for me last year and get some of the good stuff on it. I had no idea it could make the much of a difference.
Best wishes Tim.
