It's probably best I do not answer this one...  I love Osage... does that shock anyone :)

One thing I've noticed with whoever you talk to, don't knock the Poplar calls.  Poplar/Cherry and Poplar/Walnut are hard to beat.  In fact, I think Poplar as a box makes as fine of a call as many others out there.  I have a many of calls with Poplar.

Here are a few of my favorite paddles and boxes.

Paddles:
Bloodwood
Osage
Walnut
Ebony

Boxes:
Walnut
Osage
Poplar
Alaskan Yellow Cedar

Bird last year I shot with an Osage/Bloodwood call.  Year before was an all walnut caller.  All walnut is a deadly deadly combination!

I feel like I'm leaving a combo out and disgracing it...  so many to choose from  *peep*  This is my opinion only and I doubt very many people like my sound from a box call!  Loud and Proud!

I love walnut in any way shape or form.  IMO one of the best all around woods for box calls.

Walnut over Pecan, Maple over Walnut, Walnut over Walnut, Walnut over poplar, Cherry over Walnut, Walnut over Mahogany.

I also like Maple over Cedar,  and I hate to say it, but Osage over Poplar, plus many more.

Did I mention that I like walnut.

Probably the best answer given above.  With that Said, I have a Black Limba and Yellow Heart call that really sounds great.  They are instruments and what ever sounds like the hen you have in your mind will work....most of the time.

For me its cedar lid w/butternut box or cherry lid w/mahogany box.  Cedar is by far my favorite type of wood, turkey calls or not! I just love the smell of that stuff!

Since I make a classic style box, I think it depends on the type of box that you want.  If you want a box with a flatter radius that gobbles good, I love the mahogany box with cherry.  Makes it have a very mature gobble but a very good role over for the hen and gobbler yelp.   It will do all of the soft calling.

If you go with a more rounded radius in the cuttin and cackling type of call,  I love the walnut box and mahogany lid.  It gives it the volume that you want, but still will make those roost pitting or wake up calls that is written about in this months Turkey Country NWTF magazine.  Box calls make some of the best pitting calls I know.  You do not have to have a slate or trumpet to make these calls.

For strickly locating, hard cutting and cackling, I would go with walnut and persimmon.  Most hunters don't hear this hardwood on hardwood like Mr. Stribling made.  But it is the best locator call going in my opinion.  It would be similiar to the walnut on walnut Wiltznucs is talking about.

The short box I hunt with is walnut with a purple heart lid.  The call plays well on both sides.

Wow, I can't believe no-one mentioned them but my all time favorites are Snakewood over Holly and Ebony over Holly.  Then I would say maple over walnut, walnut over walnut, walnut over poplar and walnut over mahog.

In paddle calls it gotta be maple over butternut, cherry over butternut, and the next one Al & Josh come up with for me.---Jason
