Sunday was the last day of our second shotgun season here in Ohio and I chose to brave the cold one more time. The morning started off at 2 degrees and we have about 6 inches of snow on the ground still. Early in the hunt I had 4 does come by me on a ridgetop on a southern Ohio farm. I took the shot with my muzzleloader and after the smoke cleared I went after my deer. I saw a deer covered in snow but knew it wasn't mine but I went to investigate anyway. I found a beautiful 130" buck with 8 points and a large area on his side chewed up by coyotes. Then all at once I noticed a tiny puppy curled up in the snow next to the dead deers belly . He was shivering and had ice caked on his fur almost 2 inches thick. Needless to say he stunk like the insides of the deer he had been surviving on for a few days , but I picked him up and held him to melt the ice on him anyway. I carried him the half mile back to my vehicle and fed and watered him. We are good buds alraedy . I brought him home and have already found a good home for him . I knew right away that this little boy had to be named " Buck " ! He would have surely frozen if left out one more night or eaten by the coyotes that alraedy claimed this deer. This has really put me in the Christmas spirit ! Thanks for reading the story of my Christmas buck !

That is a tough little fellow! You really did a fine deed saving that little bugger. He deserves a great life. I really get peeved at people that drop those innocent animals off in the wild!

Cool story, good for you for giving him a chance...

Thanks for all the great comments ! I brought Lucky Buck home and made some phonecalls which ended up with me finding him a great new home. His new family has experience training dogs and they recently lost their dog due to age. I bonded with the little guy during our short time together and it saddened me a little to give him up. But since we have three rottweilers and my deer tracking wire-hair dachsund, it just would have been to many mouths around here. That's what my Wife decided anyway , LOL !Merry Christmas to everyone ! And Merry Christmas to " Lucky Buck " !!!!!

I got an update on Lucky Buck today. His new owner has taken him to the vet for a check up and shots. He is doing well and is settled into his new home . He has a NEW sleeping partner to curl up with at night instead of that dead deer, an almost, two year old boy who just loves sleeping with the pup ! I'm told they share a bed almost every night ! Evidently he was towing the boy around the house by his diaper... backwards ! Thanks for all the great comments guys , they let me know that I did the right thing ! Happy New Year to everyone !!!!
