I got into a good question on the MS board about people selling calls outside of the booths at the Nationals. Just wonder what is you opinion on the subject.
Is it ok for someone who doesn't have a booth to sell calls out of a bag, in the lobby or out of their room?
First off I know it's not within the rule of the show but it does happen a lot.

in their room yes, in the lobby ? but in where people paid good $ to get a booth abosolutely not.jmho

is it ethical no is it gona happen yes....if someone wants to get a call from a callmaker that dosnt have a booth then it should happen outside the event...me personally i hope to attend and will have a few calls but not the intenet of selling i always carry a few around with me just to let people hear and play them if they want one i take orders...

seems the convention charges the guys that buy a booth a very pretty penny.
Its a risk for those guys to buy the space---they have to have a good show just to break out in my opnion. I was there last year and did not carry any calls to sell. Had the opportunity, but as for myself, I didnt think it would be amiable to walk around in front of vendors and sell calls. You know it would be noticed and could cause ill feelings.
For the guys that belly up and pay them that price...(which from what I understand continues to go up)..... I wish them all the luck.
Guess I am kinda in the same frame of mind as Auggie on this one.

Good question. I know a lot of callmakers use this show as a meeting point to deliver ordered calls. I think this is a great way to meet the callmakers and also see your call before you pay for it. Certainly no problem with this. However, for a callmaker to show up with a case full of calls and walk around on the floor selling them is wrong to the guys that have paid big bucks for an opportunity to be seen by the public. Advertisement is basically what you are paying for at the show unless you can bring a whole bunch of stuff and sell it all. What really gets to me about the show is the top callmakers that take a bunch of calls they have made and sell them to guys they have never seen or talked to while some of their customers have been on a two year or longer waiting list. And don't say this does not happen because I know for a fact it does. The callmakers say they are paying for their expenses by doing this but if they contacted the guys that have been waiting for a long time do they not think these guys would pay for their stuff before the show? Money is money. I naver have figured out their reasoning other than for free advertising before they let someone have the call or letting "friends" by-pass the waiting period.

I took calls with me last year but didn't carry them into the event. If someone wanted to buy one, I would have done that in my room. I could see how it would make the folks that had booths upset to have people selling in from of their booth. jmo

I'm not a call maker, just a call buyer- so my take maybe slightly different.
I don't necessarily think it's wrong, especially if the callmaker brings the customer off to the side, and doesn't sell calls right in front of a booth. No rules are being broken, so as long as the guy walking around is discreate, there shouldn't be any problems. On the other hand, a guy selling calls shouldn't be made to feel as if he's in a drug deal, sneaking back to rooms, and going in to restrooms to sell a pot call!
Lets all be honest. If someone wants to buy a call from a guy at a booth he will. Chances are, the guy in the aisles is being sought out buy the buyer- and that's who he wants to buy from. Having a booth isn't going to change that...

Why?? Because some will agree and some don't. Some will sell and some won't. Some will buy and some won't. It proves nothing and does nothing productive. How simple is that?

Why, didn't really need a reason to start a thread or do I? Just a simple question is all it is. I may be one of the ones with the case next year *lol*. Just figured I din't want to be lynched is all. ::) I just figured it was a good as topic as any.
Delivering a call is great, rooms and lobby no problem there either but in the vendor area now that's where the problem lies. Labman to answer you I would have to say go outside. OpryLand Hotel is huge. The customers or buyers who are inside the vendors area should be there to see and buy calls from the vendors or atleast I would hope so. If not then I waste alot of money. I could make way more money selling out of a case/bag (no overhead) than I can inside but vendors pay for the right to sell inside. I forego that price to see an meet freinds and other call makers and to have a good time. Maybe let some people who want to see or buy a call get to play it first. Even get to give some young'un a call or two. Maybe past along something to be remembered by before the dirt nap.
As for holding calls for the show. I wouldn't do that the customer comes first in my book, only a good business practice but that's just me.

Richard I've picked up calls that were ordered before by callmakers and I know some people take calls to help pay for their trip. I think common sense goes a long way and be respectful for the people that have paid money and do it away from the booths (outside the convention/room/etc... ).
I met several callmakers last year and I acquired the calls I had coming to me.
I've never seen someone just peddling calls. I've heard it happen and if they did it in front of a booth, if I paid for it, I'd probably be po'd.

I see the charges for the booth(s) and I just cannot figure out why they charge so much. I'm scared it's running off the smaller guys *cry*

The NWTF has fought this for ever. I paid $1420.00 for a double booth this year. Most callmakers can't afford this in over head, and pay for their rooms and travel expenses....and expect to break even. The reason that I and two others have a booth is to help some of these people have a place to sell their calls. Unfortunately, the State of TN, now charges every booth holder a fee (business license) on top of what the NWTF charges......along w/ an additional tax for anything sold while you are there. I have no problem for the folks who can't handle these fees, to sell their calls anyway they can.

I'm going to have a good time and enter a couple of calls. I will take a few like sweetness. If someone wants to see my calls, and listen to them, I would do so in the lobby or room. I would not do this in an area where people are paying to showcase their calls. At this point I am booked about as much as I want to and still have fun making calls. Hope to see a lot of you there. Have fun, as, my son and I plan to. My first time there, so If you see these two guys, introduce yourself. We are down to earth ole Ms. boys and love to talk to folks.
