Title: How Far?
Post by: creekrocket on November 02, 2010, 07:42:59 PM
What is your average shot where you hunt? Some say that I would only be taking 25yrd shots where I live, but that hasnt been the case. I love it(bow hunting), but I also struggle with it at the same time. So..whats your average yardage?

Anywhere from 15-20 yards but I attribute this to my setups and some luck.  ;)  My furthest kill shot was at 35 yards.

Depends on a few things, your ability, terrain, conditions.  I have killed deer at 40 yards with my compound that were completely in the open and the wind was calm.  I wouldn't take the same shot if it were windy or if it was in thick cover.  I also had alot of practice time in all summer shooting 3D tournaments and league shooting so I was comfortable with my compound taking longer shots.  Now that I have switched to my recurve I won't shoot past 20 yards regardless of conditions.  I guess my point is you can position yourself for close shots but the deer don't always cooperate so it comes down to what you are comfortable with and what conditions will allow for.

... Lou nailed it with the "set-up" (stand) - nothin' like proper stand placement for gettin' up close & personal ... 8)

My shots are usually 10 to 25 yards, the key is stand placement.. the deer dont always go by that though! I only use 1 pin on my bow, I have for years 10 - 30 yards. I like the simplicity of one pin.. I have killed at 40 with one pin it just takes practice. Have shot 3 p&y's over the years and all have been less than 10 yards.... *up*
