Title: Always new I enjoyed Fall Hunting
Post by: Porter on October 27, 2010, 08:56:54 AM
but never really knew why until I found my ole hunting journal full of pics last night.  I was a little confused on when I really started turkey hunting.  I knew it was either 93 or 94, but it was definitely 94.  I was so relieved I found this.  I've been looking for the journal for quite some time.  It had a lot of photos of my grandpa and it was driving me crazy not finding them :(

Anyways, here's a photo of the first ever bird I harvested.  It was a nice Tom and to date, the biggest weighted one I've ever shot.  Specs say he was weighed in at 25 1/2lbs, 1 1/4 " spurs and an 11.5 beard.  Back then everything was done at check in stations and this was done at the station.  I briefly remember the cat and mouse game with this Tom that mid October.  I would have sworn my first bird was during the Spring, but nope it was during the fall!!!!

I don't recall why I wore this funky looking hat for, but I sure look funny :)  By the way, that's my best friend who is also my cousin.  He's the crazy one that I blame for my obsession with turkey hunting!

Ok now this is going to shock a lot of people why I like Osage for.  It actually started on this hunt.  Why did it start on this hunt for, because I was sitting against an Osage tree at the beginning of this hunt...  As we were sitting there working this bird, guess what fell out of the tree and onto my head?  Yeap a hedge apple...  I remember it hurting and the bad words that spewed out of my foot!!!  But after the bird was harvested, I knew it was good luck.  I believe I have harvested 3 to 4 birds while up against an Osage tree.  I believe they are very very good luck!!!

Yes the face paint might have been a bit much.  Worst thing I ever did was go hunting before class and get changed and head to school.  Only problem was, I was in such a hurry I forgot to remove my face paint...  Professor asked me to stay after class.  I did and he told me to never come to close like that again.  I had no idea what he was talking about, but said ok.  Went to the bathroom and looked... I was flat embarrassed :(
