Glad he is ok and wonder if the youth was hunting by himself. I know at 14, I sure wasn't.

While this young man deffinately needs supervision I can't say that I had it at that age. I started hunting with my Grandpa when I could walk without having to be carried. I know that I hunted alone by the age of 10 if not before then. But....when you spend every day in the woods from the time that you can you tend to learn a lot! At age 5 I was the youngest person ever (1982) in the state of Arkansas to ever pass the Hunter Education Course. By age 14 I had been hunting on my own for around 4 years. Like I said though I hunted every day there was an open season for anything. I hunted all the time.
There is a big difference though, this kid may not have been brought up the right way. A lot of kids now are not as responsible or mature enough to do most things that I would have done (and many of you) at early ages. Half the kids that are 16+ arent mature enough to drive a car let alone go hunting by themselves. I honestly blame the parents and the thinking that they want to be their childs best friend crap!!! Be a parent and be responsible. The child will grow to respect you and in the end will be your friend.

I like most of you started hunting at a early age alone...I can also remember going to the first hunter safety courses offered in the State of Mississippi in the 70's. they did it in the schools for a couple years I don't know why they stopped.
I went through the course with both of my boys, to support them and make sure they were paying attention.
I seen several kids dropped off for the day both times and I have to ask myself how much did those kids really get out of it.
I am not saying this is what happened with this young man, but he missed something, his parents should be answering some questions about now.
I know there are some parents that think just because thier child went to a hunter safety class and has a card that they are ready to go in the woods alone and that just is not so.
The learning is really just starting, but for a kid that does not have a parent or someone that hunts to help them it can be trouble in the making.

To each his own...none of my sons hunted alone untill they were 16. Some may not agree w/ me, but 14 is a bit young to be unattended while hunting. JMO!

This incident could happen for a 14 year old as well as veteran hunter. You must identify your target 100%. -- My best friend and turkey hunting partner Wade Wineman was shot one fall A.M. I will tell his story, in hopes that illustrates the point. --- There was a huge flock of fall turkeys sighted by members of the hunting club where we turkey hunt. My friend's family owns the land and leases out the deer rights plus another 150 acres on the north end are open for them to turkey hunt in. This fall there was a huge group of birds (near 100) in the section of woods that they could hunt. My friend Wade went in this section to hunt and I went down further in his woods to hunt. The wind was howling this particular morning. Wade slipped into the Air Strip woods after first making sure there were no hunters coming from the airstrip side. He went in and was calling next to a large cane break at first light where the big flock was sighted. He heard, what he thought were turkeys, yelping on the other side of the cane break. He got in a narrow slough and was coming up out of the slough on the other side. He had just been kee keeing on a mouth call when "Bomb" he was shot. It knocked him to the ground. He got up and stagered to his feet. A fellow came up and said " Where is my turkey, What did you do with my turkey.?" Wade said, what turkey, you just shot me. He staggered out to the airstrip and the Game Warden friend that watches Wade's woods got him in the truck and took him to the nearby hospital. He was hit by 17 pellets in the neck, head and shoulder. Two pettets went through his neck (just missing the juglar) and remain there today. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT LOOK LIKE TURKEYS IN THE WOODS. BE 100% POSITIVE BEFORE YOU PULL THE TRIGGER!!!! This hunter had to testify how he shot someone at hunter safety coarses across Ms. I hope the young hunter has to do the same!

Anybody that shoots another person and thought it was game should loose his hunting privliges period forever.. I know some people say there are accidents ,, Bull a turkey looks like a turkey , a deer looks like a deer, a person looks like a person . anyone and I mean anyone that shoots at sound movement noise or whatever should not be aloud to hunt. I cant imagine not identifying what you are shooting at. I am always looking for a specific spot to shoot on game not something I thought i saw. That goes for any type of weapon..Bow hunting accidents how in the he77 does that happen? ???
