Heard some mention acid staining on here. Anyone want to reveal what they use, or is this a trade secret?

I have been wanting to make one with it but I think my checkered boxes will be off color in the checkering. Have ment to do a solid sided box to try it with....did a few test samples and it was not hard to do---seemed to be a slight darker tint than the color Charlie gets from whatever he uses.
His color is great and bette in my opnion....tends to be towards that goldish color.....the tiger stripes with this agent tends to be a little darker, may have just been the time I left the heat gun on it.
Charlie is the master on this for sure !!!!

I'm not sure that the stain will penetrate deep enough anyway to allow for the checkering to look evenly stained. Why not just make the call without checkering, especially if it's Tiger Maple? It'll look better IMO!! *cheers*

just remember----what I used tended to be a little deeper in color than Charlie's----I kinda like his color better. But no more than that stuff costs---its worth a try for ya man

the stain is refered to as "aqua fortis" you can look up the recipe on the net........it can be noxious to create......but a simple version is
combine cider vinegar and very old rusty barbwire.....let is set for several months....apply, let dry and sand the raised grain...repeat till the desired stain is accomplished....

i tyed it with a 50/50 mix of water and vineger with steel wool...let it set for a week and tested it out...i done a sycamore pot and maple pot..they both had a greenish grey color to em...the longer it sits the darker it got..also i have heard that different types of vineger will give diff. colors...

I've got a group of 9 that I am working on, I know I am not going to wait a week using an acid stain on these. There is one in the mix, all you need is some reflector yellow paint on it, and let it fly. ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO

let me correct my self...i let the mix sit for a week...i just wiped it on and let it sit a few seconds then wiped it dry...i used multiple coats to get the desired look...

Potassium Permanganate mixed with water also is a very good stain for Tiger Maple.

got a question---does it give you a more goldish color than the acquafortis I am using that tends to be darker brownish in the stripes

Potassium Permanganate is a purple liquid that turns wood a golden brown. The more coats the darker it gets. A lot of custom muzzleloader makers use it to stain their maple stocks. Mose made me an owl hooter and crow call out of birds eye maple that turned out well. I'll try to find a picture to post tomorrow.
If you know someone that works in water treatment they might be able to get you some. A little goes a long way.

Got mine from a buddy but if you know someone that works in a water treatment, power plant, steel mill they may be able to get you some. WEAR RUBBER GLOVES. IT WILL STAIN YOUR HANDS.

Here is a sample piece of the cherry I have. The Danish Oil samples are a one coat on the left ,two coats on the bottom and the Auqua Fortis in the middle.

Please be careful with the Potassuim permanganate! That chemical is a strong oxidizer. I`m a chem instructor and it definitely stains!

Alright, guy's.... Some times I wish I had never put any acid stained pieces on the net for anyone to see...I have been doing it for years but I made the mistake of posting on the internet a couple years ago...first off the stain I use is old and homemade...probably won't make anymore...it is dilute nitric acid with some steel wool dissolved in it..the amt. of acid and water determines the final color...it is made to stain tiger maple but will work with other figured woods to some extent...the difference in the pores in the grain determine the amount absorbed and hence the dramatic striped color. the amount of heat applied determines the shade...green tinted means not enough heat...this is an old gunstock staining method used by the Kentucky rifle makers in times long passed...I got it from an old time rifle maker that used to live outside of Franklin, Tennessee. It does not fade with time and is difficult to sand out if you change your mind...Potassium Permanganate is also a chemical that will stain wood a darker color and bring out the stripes...but it will lighten with age and is easier to sand out if you change you mind down the line or want to refinish a piece at a later date
