Title: Weird thing happened.
Post by: SS Custom Calls on July 28, 2010, 11:06:30 AM
I was ripping some paddle stock out a few days ago. Was pushing a piece of Walnut into the blade and suddenly, my right hand got knocked off the piece of wood... Dang, hurt like HECK!!!! I grabbed my hand and tucked it under my armpit. Not sure why, maybe afraid to see if I had a finger or not.  *lol* I looked in a second and had a skinned place on my finger nail, and right above it a nasty bruise and small cut... I couldn't figure out what happened. Felt like when you mash your finger with a hammer.. I was upstairs gaining my composure and had a thought. Told Josh to go check the teeth on the sawblade. Bingo!!! One of the carbide tips had come off and nailed me pretty dang hard on the finger.. All I can think of now, what if it had hit me in the face!  *cry* Anyone else had anything similar to this happen.?

Glad your ok bud.  Never had that to happen.

Good thing it wasn't osage you were cutting,  That stuff would've ripped all the teeth off the blade.

Dang Al.......Better toss that blade....They braze the tips to the blade and if there are any impurities on either piece of metal (like oils and such),  the braze joint will not be stable.......The scary part is, you cannot tell if one is un-stable or not.............Glad it didn't hurt you any worse....That was probably like a .22 cal. flying through the air

I had one come off a Skilsaw blade while I was shaving some wood to fit at work. My hand was holding the front of the saw when it hit a knot. Doctor was unsure but said it was likely the carbide tooth and a piece of the knot went through the tip of my middle finger. I lost 3/4 of my fingernail and 3/16 or so of the tip of bone. It's quite a sight seeing you bone splintered and nail gone. It took over 5 yrs to get the feeling back in tip of my finger. Nail grew back. Your a lucky man Al.

WOW !  glad you are OK.. Never heard of that happening..somebody is looking out for you..that could have been really nasty... what
I always wear a full face shield when running my table saw  and try to stay out of the "line of fire" when pushing stock through it.
What kind of blade was it?

Charlie, it was a Porter Cable blade called "Razor". I'd read good reviews on this blade. Heck, I'm as nervous as a dog poopin' a peach seed around that saw now!  *aah*

Al

The only time we see that happen is when there is a nail or a bullet in the board. One of my guys was cutting some African Mahogany a few years back..and struck a 458 solid. Talk about sparks flying....not to mention some teeth from the saw blade. Glade you only got nicked!

WOW, don't usually happen like Bill said unless you hit metal. Could be a bad weld like Scotty said, but you said it best when you said the Good Lord was looking out for you! Glad you are OK.

Bill, I thought of exactly that. I went and got the piece I was sawing later. No metal of any kind in it. Makes you realize how fast something can go wrong with power tools!!  :o

Had the pusher stick fall off while cutting a lid for my first box call. The kickback broke my thumb. Ouch.

These tools of the trade are dangerous.....Most folks who have been building calls or working with wood for a long time have had some kinda incident sooner or later..not a matter of if just a matter of when...thank goodness your's was minor... be careful, very careful...
