Title: new puppy
Post by: SOONER on July 19, 2010, 10:22:00 AM
hello all:
20 years ago this month pete clare drove to lowry va. to pick up his first turkey dog from the john byrne family. it was a female and her name was cutter. i hunted behind this dog when i was first introduced to fall turkey hunting. this spring pete and i talked and agreed to name myra and i's new puppy cutter. this will be the second cutter in my group of friends and hunting partners. besides it will be easy to yell "cutter-keekee" and see if anybody listens. she will also bring back fond memories for pete and myself. pictures to follow:

fred
thanks for the post. were 11 weeks old now and a very nice puppy. she has just the right amount of spunk and laid back in her. we go wide open for periods of an hour or so and then laid back for an hour or so and then we crash. thank the LORD we have the two older girl dogs to keep her entertained. i can not believe that keekee took her in but you would think it was her puppy. this year the farm is all planted in beans and corn. i have nightmares thinking about loosing her in one of those fields. until we listen a little better she only gets to run loose in the fenced in yard or where i can see for a good distance. right now she is totally independant. never looks to she where you are or could care less about it. she goes where she likes and everything is a new experience. we went to the spring creek the other day and water is not our favorite thing.  we like spashing around in shallow spots but if we get up to our belly were out of there. our eyes are getting good enough to chase butterflies now and she did watch two jakes on the road in front of the truck the other morning. by the end of august i'll start letting her chase hens and poults as long as the poults are big enough to escape. it will take her a while to associate the smell of turkeys to the sight of turkeys. she seems to be a barker. out of frustration she will stand and bark for ten minutes if the old dogs will not play with her any more. i think this is a good sign because that is what makes a dog bark on the flush. the frustration of not being able to catch the bird. were having lots of fun being a puppy right now. she will be a little young to do much good this fall but she will get a tremedous amount of experience and i'll put up with her short falls. if she ends up half the dog keekee is i'll be very pleased and i know she will because she will have the opportunity to be into turkeys from oct.1 to dec. each fall.
