Title: Special orders for Special Friends (Part two added)
Post by: Jake St. John on July 05, 2010, 08:34:22 AM
Don't you just love special orders for special friends.  No way to explain this order except with a story. --  After the end of this past season,  I was approached by my hunting partner of about 30 years, to make a reproduction of a special call for him and the owner.   The last weekend of the season each year at Tunica, Ms. is saved by my friend Wade Wineman for the Winn's.  Hal and his son Eustice.  Both taught the ways of the wild turkey by their father and grandfather Dr. Eustice Winn.  Dr. Winn was an original member of the OK Hunting Club back in the 50's, that Wade has written about in his turkey books.  The last weekend of this past season was a rainy one, and after a thunder storm at first light.  Hal and Eustice IV got out from under a deer stand and started to hunt.  Going separate ways, Eustice spooked a group of birds, got a big rounder on them, and set up.  After a while he started yelping on a 55 year old call that had been given to him by his grandfather on his sixtenth birthday.  Eustice is 23 and has mastered the art of calling on that original Stribling, and boy he make it talk.  After a short series of calls, Little Eustice killed this fine gobbler.  A hermit bird we think.  Came in by himself.  Did not say a word.  12 inch beard and 1 1/2 spurs.  Didn't weigh that much.  As fine a Eastern you will ever kill in Tunica Co, Ms. A real trophy bird.

After the season I got with Little Eustice to borrow that old call and make templates. The call has Dr. Winn's name on one side and Eustice Winn IV on the other.  The Winns' are restoring their old Antebellum home in Benoit, Ms., the Burris Home.  Little Eustice gave me a piece of walnut 4x6x24, that was a piece left over from restoring the winding staircase.  The persimmon is coming from a tree off one of the Clubs that Dr. Winn was a member, Burke Landing, near Clarksdale, Ms.  I can't wait to finish this project.   I'll post the results when the calls are finished.  I cut the walnut blanks out this AM.                                             .

Part 2.  This is the new Stribling Box on the left with my Eddleman style paddle attached.  It is a longer and narrower box compared to the Gator Gobbling Stribling on the right.  The sound is very similiar to the cutting box that I make out of walnut and mahogany.  It is tuned twin raspy hens.  A good friend of mine that bought my first Stribling box for $40  -    20 years ago is getting this one in Alexandria, La.  That first box has a chapter devoted to it in Mr. Wineman's book Bird of Courage.  As soon as I finish the other new style striblings with original style persimmon paddles, I will post them.  It will be part 3.

John those are two very fine historical callers right there!  I cannot wait to get my pair of callers from you!

I've always wondered how long you've been building calls and thanks for posting that info below.  What a great addition your friend is adding!

I cannot wait to see the persimmon paddle callers!!!!

I made my first Stribling reproduction in 1986.  It sounded so bad that I gave it to my brother.  I don't think you could call a turkey with it.  Now the second call that I made in 1987, was on top of that big bird that I posted earlier.  I made calls for about 4 or 5 years that I gave to friends and people that I hunted with.  Colt got that first box that I sold.  He has over 125 box calls in his collection.  He has about 10 or 12 of my calls.  Told me the other day he needed a couple of more.  This is one of them.

Well here she is.  I backed off and let little Eustice call on the original 55 year old Stribling on the left and then he played my reproduction on the right.  I could not tell the difference.  I am still working on the left side but it is almost ready to go.

Man oh man...  you did a great job and that call looks amazing!!!  I love the classy look and the history of them...

You are lucky to have Eustice to give them a test (although I'm confident it is not needed)...  I bet he was elated too!
