It's been a long time since I was able to chase birds in KY. Well a year is a long time when you are waiting for turkey season! I hunt in Casey co. and am fortunate to be able to stay with the landowner. I rolled out at 5:30 a.m. and got set up, only to see someone else setting up 200 yds away. AARRGGHHH !!!@##@#@! And wouldn't you know it, that is where the nearest birds were gobbling. Well the birds flew down and the OTHER hunter shot and missed. My morning started off bad but I moved on and located birds . I called in 5 hens 2 jakes and a trio of longbeards throughout my morning. Every bird came very close EXCEPT the mature Toms. Ky allows all day hunting for turkeys, so after a nice lunch I was back in the woods by 5 pm. As I approached a pasture where I would set up to wait, I noticed that the birds were already there in front of me. I eased up to a tree and sat down to call. After a little soft-calling on a Shadetree longbox, the flock of 8 toms made their way in to my set-up. I was able to pick out a bird and took him cleanly at 20yds. As soon as I shot, 4 of the other toms jumped on my bird and proceeded to "flog" him for a few minutes. I was able to catch this all on video too, that was pretty cool. My bird tugged the scales down to 24 lbs. and he sported a 10.75 " paint brush beard and 1 1/8 " spurs. That's a pretty good start to the turkey hunting season. The next day was Sunday and the birds didn't cooperate as well as the day before. At 12 o'clock I was heading back to Ohio to meet up with Gregg Guthridge for a few days of chasing Buckeye Birds. Rain is settling in for a few days at the end of first week,and as soon as it clears, I will be back down in Casey co. to collect my second Tom there !
