Title: Helsby's Custom Calls
Post by: HelsbysCustomCalls on March 28, 2010, 08:11:08 AM
Hi everyone, my name is Richard Helsby. I live in Canada, just north of Kingston Ontario. I am a husband, but not a father. My wife and I have been married now some 26 years, and I am 44. I work as a Millwright, and Machinist for the local utility company in the water and wastewater treatment department. I got heavy into the turkey hunting 4 years ago, when the introduced population spread into our area. I fell in love with the box call, when I stumbled onto a few websites that offered custom calls! It was then that I decided to try to make my own call. It wasnt long before I started making more, and more, and it grew into a hobby that controls me! I am not in this game to make money, never have been. I get money to make more calls!!!! LOL

Nice to be here and meet all of you likeminded people who love the art that is callmaking!!!!

Richard

I guess not so much about techniques but more about the best wood combinations and dimensions, especially for long boxes.... it seems butternut and cedar are best for long boxes??

gbblr-killer,

Go to the Custom Calls (CCO) website and go to Turkey Box & Paddle Calls thread and see at the top a single  thread called "How I make a Box Call"  It is a great thread by Lee that will help you get a good picture of what you're up against.  As far as wood combo's go you have to discover that for yourself.  I think just by looking through old threads you'll see made super wood combos that would never have been posted if they didn't work and work well.
