I stopped on the road to eyeball a flock this morning . They paid me no attention , even though they were no more than 70 yards . Evidently being hungry they just continued to scratch in the snow on a south facing slope . When I brought the truck to a complete stop I rolled down the window and let out a short, shrill whistle , like when you want to get someones attention . While it was short , and still in my teeth , one hen went from a feeding posture to airborne , and back to earth . That's quick reflexes for sure .
What have you witnessed them do ?
On a side note , it was odd seeing those birds walking in this deep snow , being momentarily held up on top , then sinking up to their breast feathers as their weight was transfered from one foot to the other .
