Contacted Ralph Permar about doing something special with his .45 design this late winter. If you never reached out to Mr. Permar to talk turkeys and trumpets, and are considering a Permar call, do it. He's a great guy.
I wanted a .45 for a while, having owned his standard trumpet and a 1920. Most everyone tends to agree Mr. Permar's .45 is one of the easiest running trumpets today. I also wanted an amber tip, and learned on the phone he is adding a spiral to those tips now having upgraded some of his equipment. Together we decided desert ironwood, an excellent choice for a yelper, and the wait began. Hanging up I truly believe Mr. Permar was as excited about this project as I was.
What I found the day it arrived was a mailbox full of feathers. Wow can this thing run, exceeding all my high expectations. I can't believe I didn't get a .45 years ago. Runs easy, sounds awesome. Looks incredible. The interior spiral cut in the amber is really cool. A master craftsman for sure.
I have owned many trumpets over the years, but recently settled on two pure turkey hunting trumpet tools: this Ralph Permar .45, and Austin Bott's adjustable.
Here's the .45:
